Frequently Asked Qustions

You’ve got Plasti Dip questions, we’ve got Plasti Dip answers.

How far does a can of Plasti Dip® go?
The 429ml liquid can will cover approximately 5 sq. ft. at 10 mils thickness. The 325ml aerosol spray will cover about 6 sq. ft. at 5 mils thickness.
Why is the finish dull?
Plasti Dip protective coating has a satin finish. If you are experiencing a cloudy or hazy finish, it’s likely caused by high humidity. Avoid these conditions or add approximately 5-10% naphtha to reduce the problem.
Why is the Plasti Dip sagging or dripping?
Dipping and removing too quickly can cause this. Remove at a rate of 1” every 5 seconds. If experiencing runs or sags when spraying, move can further away from the surface and apply a lighter coat. Sagging and dripping can also be caused by high humidity, high temperatures, windy conditions, or direct sunlight. Ideal conditions are low humidity, 70 degrees, little to no air movement in a well-ventilated area.
Is priming necessary?
Most items being dip coated do not require priming because the coating is shrinking around the item as it dries. However, in extreme conditions or when adding protective coating to a large metal surface, primer is recommended. Use Plasti Dip Primer or a high quality acrylic auto body-type primer. Do not use Rust-Oleum® primer as it is not compatible.
Is it safe to dip children's toys, animal containment, kitchen utensils etc.?
Plasti Dip does not contain any heavy metals, and when completely dry, is considered harmless. However, it is not recommended that it be used on items that may be chewed or inserted into the mouth as it may present a choking hazard.
How thick can I apply Plasti Dip?
When following the directions, you can apply as many coats of Plasti Dip protective coating as you like. In most uses 10-12 mils thickness is adequate (2 dip coats, 3-4 brush coats, 4-5 spray coats). Greater thickness might be necessary for aesthetic reasons or in extreme cases.
Can I add colourant to the Plasti Dip and make a custom colour?
Mixing different colours of Plasti Dip protective coating can be done to achieve other colours. Your local hardware, home center, or paint store may also sell tubes of tinting colours. Add approximately 1/3 of a 1 oz. tube per 14.5 oz. can of Plasti Dip.
Is Plasti Dip chemical resistant?
Plasti Dip protective coating has excellent resistance to acids, alkaline, and most common household chemicals. However, it is best to test this before going ahead with your application. Plasti Dip does have limited resistance to petroleum-based products.
Can Plasti Dip be used to seal electrical connections?
Liquid Tape
While Plasti Dip has excellent dielectric properties (insulates against shock), our Liquid Tape Electrical product is specifically formulated and conveniently packaged for this application.
Can Plasti Dip be applied to PVC?
Rub acetone or fingernail polish remover in an inconspicuous area and apply Plasti Dip to test for success.
Does Plasti Dip contain polyvinylchloride?
Plasti Dip does not contain any polyvinylchloride or any other vinyl resins.
Is there any product on the market that can be applied over Plasti Dip to provide a glossy finish?
Yes, the Plasti Dip Enhancer in the Glossifier™ formulation provides a glossy finish on cured Plasti Dipped items. Plasti Dip Enhancers are formulated to bond only with the unique chemical structure of Plasti Dip and are not recommended for use on other surfaces.
